Curtain Call is the latest work by mum & gypsy, centering on the very act of “theater” itself.
The piece depicts the backstage life of a theater—the time between the performers’ arrival at the venue and the moment a performance begins.
Throughout its history, mum & gypsy has created works that transform memories of people and places, historical facts based on documents, and words born from collaborations with writers from various fields, all through the unique perspective of director Takahiro Fujita.
In Curtain Call, rather than drawing from past motifs, the company deliberately turns its gaze toward the practice closest to themselves—the act of theater-making. By confronting theater anew, Fujita aims to explore and expand the possibilities of theatrical expression, while momentarily letting go of fiction’s strength to focus on theater as his most personal and familiar “practice.”
